Peter Marshall

Text Box: Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Peter Marshall has been painting ever   since he was a child.  His self-portrait of the first native Governor General of Jamaica, Sir Clifford Campbell, was done before he received formal training.  This painting now hangs in the Royal Collection, Kings House, Jamaica, West Indies.

Peter completed his formal education at the Edna Manley School Of Visual and Performing Arts.  After graduating, he continued to work and exhibit, particularly in the Jamaica Annual Exhibitions.  Work in these exhibitions won him a number of awards, including a silver medal for a self-portrait in the Festival ‘84 Art Exhibition.  Over the next years, the work of Peter Marshall became increasingly acclaimed and in demand.  He was the resident artist for Life Of Jamaica Insurance Company for three years.  This resulted in commissions from that and other leading corporations and several one-man shows.  He received numerous awards and his work began to be in many important collections such as Jamaica High Commission office in London, England where his painting of the portrait of late national hero, Norman Washington Manley now hangs.

After this period of success, Peter migrated in 1987 to the United States primarily to take care of his sick mother who was living in New York City.  Her illness lasted for a number of years during which time Peter put his art career on hold to spend time with her before she passed.

Shortly thereafter Peter had the opportunity to exhibit his work with other well known artists such as in "Genesis", 1994.  He also had a one-man show at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY in 1995.

Peter’s work has been exhibited at:

Peter currently resides in Florida.  Although he started out with portraits, his work since has evolved and become more diversified ranging form abstracts, semi-abstracts, realistic to impressionistic pieces.  His work is vibrant and dynamic with  a universal appeal that transcends any one particular culture.

 Artist Vision/Statement
Although Peter’s work is influenced by local and international art professionals, he attributes his artistic ideas to divine inspiration and God-given abilities.

"In my work, I am inspired by life experiences, emotional and spiritual concerns, and the wonders of God’s creations.  When I reflect on the mysteries and experiences of life, these issues find their way to my canvas and are expressed through layers of colors and surrealistic camouflage.  Somehow, I feel compelled to paint for the glory of God."
